How to Properly Store Away Winter Clothes

As winter ends, it’s time to store the thick coats, warm jumpers, and extra-large doonas. But before you do that, give them a good clean at Speed-e Laundromat Newtown on Anzac Avenue, just off James Street in Toowoomba, or check out our other locations.

Read on for our complete guide to properly store away your Winter clothes.

1. Clean Everything Thoroughly

Before storing your winter clothes, it’s essential to clean them thoroughly. Stains, oils, and dirt can set over time and become difficult to remove. Use a laundromat with large-capacity washers and dryers, like Speed-e Laundromat, to handle bulky items like coats and blankets. This ensures everything is fresh and ready for storage.

2. Repair Any Damage

Inspect your winter clothes for damage, such as missing buttons, loose threads, or minor tears. Repair these issues before storing them to prevent further deterioration.

3. Choose the Right Storage Containers

Choose for breathable storage options to keep your clothes fresh. Vacuum-sealed bags save space but can sometimes damage delicate fabrics. Instead, consider using cotton storage bags or plastic bins with ventilation holes.

4. Fold Properly

Proper folding can prevent creases and damage. For heavier items like coats and sweaters, lay them flat to avoid stretching. Place acid-free tissue paper between layers to help maintain the shape and prevent colour transfer.

5. Use Cedar or Lavender

To keep pests away, avoid mothballs, which can leave a strong odour. Instead, use cedar blocks or lavender sachets. These natural alternatives repel insects and leave your clothes smelling pleasant.

6. Store in a Cool, Dry Place

The storage area should be cool, dry, and away from direct sunlight to prevent mould and fading. Avoid garages if they’re prone to extreme temperatures or humidity. A climate-controlled storage unit or a cool, dark closet works best.

7. Regular Check-Ups

Periodically check on your stored clothes to ensure they remain in good condition. Look for signs of moisture, pests, or any other issues that need addressing.

By following these steps, you can ensure that your winter wardrobe stays in great condition while stored away.
